Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a potentially life-threatening sleep disorder characterized by repeated pauses in breathing during sleep. Breathing pauses can last anywhere from several seconds to minutes, and can happen as often as 30 times or more per hour. Ongoing disrupted breathing causes an imbalance between the carbon dioxide and oxygen levels in the bloodstream, as not enough carbon dioxide exits the body, and not enough oxygen enters the body.
Sensing this imbalance, the brain sends a message to the body, telling it to wake up to restart the breathing process. People with sleep apnea will partially awake as they struggle to breathe, and this is often accompanied by loud snoring or choking sensations. Because people with sleep apnea don’t always completely wake up during the episodes, they are often unaware that they have a sleeping disorder and it can remain undiagnosed.
A sufferer can completely stop breathing numerous times per hour, and this can quickly turn into a deadly situation. Sleep apnea has been linked to a series of serious heart-related conditions, and should be investigated by the dentist at the earliest opportunity. Dr. Amos Kahane will conduct tests in order to investigate, diagnose and pinpoint suitable treatment. The dentist can offer many different types of treatment options which depend largely on the exact diagnosis and health of the patient.
Dr. Kahane can set you or your spouse with a custom-fit snoring appliance to ensure you both have a sound sleep. These appliances can be used to treat snoring alone, even if you do not suffer from sleep apnea. Please contact our office if you suspect you, or someone you would like to help, may be suffering from sleep apnea or snoring.

TENS
The potential for pain and the fear of pain are major factors that prevent some individuals from getting the dental care they really need. It has been reported that as many as 35 million Americans are overly anxious about visiting the dentist and will avoid scheduling professional dental care, even if overall health is negatively affected.
Individuals suffering from Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) are particularly subject to pain. Visiting the dentist, however, is the best way to resolve TMD pain, relying on the science of neuromuscular dentistry and a technology called Transcutaneous Electro Neural Stimulation (TENS).
Neuromuscular dentistry can alleviate chronic painful symptoms associated with TMD, including:
• Headaches or migraines
• Pain in shoulders, neck, back, teeth and behind the eyes
• Numbness or tingling in extremities
• Dizziness
• Earaches
• Jaw pain
• Ringing in the ears
• Clicking or popping sounds in the jaw joint
TENS is a specialized therapy designed to treat the pain associated with TMD by directing mild electrical pulses to your facial and jaw muscles. These impulses increase blood flow to the muscles and help to relax the muscles so the dentist can determine the ideal jaw position for your bite.
Dr. Marcela Kahane understands your pain and your fears because of her years of experience working with other TMD patients. Dr. Marcela has received special training in neuromuscular dentistry at the world-renowned Las Vegas Institute for Aesthetic Studies (LVI). She offers the comfort, technology and convenience you need to make your dental experience memorable and enjoyable, without the pain you might be expecting.
