You may have periodontal disease without even knowing it. This disease is the primary cause of tooth loss in people over the age of 35. If you have red, swollen or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, or tooth sensitivity – you may have some form of periodontal disease!
If caught in the early stages, however, periodontal disease can be reversed.
Periodontal, or gum disease, is caused by plaque that mixes with the starches and sugars in the diet, forming acids and other by-products of the mouth. These irritate the gums and cause them to become red, tender and swollen with a high occurrence of bleeding easily. If not removed on a daily basis, plaque hardens to form calculus(tartar) in the area where your teeth and gums meet. Tartar cannot be removed by brushing and flossing. This can lead to an infection called gingivitis. This eventually leads to the gums being pulled away from the tooth, allowing pockets to form, which also then fill up with more plaque. Over time, the bone structure supporting the teeth can be destroyed. This is what leads to adult teeth becoming loose and in danger of falling out.
“In a mild case of gum disease, if laid out flat, the total infected area would cover a post card. From this rather large area, bacteria and toxins enter the blood stream whenever food is chewed. This “transient bacteria” can affect the total health of an individual” Dr. Lester Burke
So the next time you are tempted to put off your hygiene appointment please remember that it is NOT …”just a cleaning…” but rather it is a quick and easy way to contribute to the well-being and maintenance of your overall health!
Patients seen by the periodontal management team at Dr. A. M. Kahane is fortunate to have the use of technology called Periowave that utilizes a non-thermal laser light combined with a photosensitizing solution designed to kill bacteria associated with periodontal diseases. Killing the bacteria halts the progression of the disease and allows healing to begin.
